Key points
- Motion design explains with movement: a word that lands, a screen that opens, a number that climbs. It is not a cartoon, it is an explanation that moves.
- One video carries one idea, told in six to ten short sentences. If you cannot sum it up in one sentence, it is not ready.
- You pick the style from what you have to show: a story, a launch, words, a demonstration or numbers.
- Your real screenshots and your real logo beat any invented picture.
What motion design really is
A motion design video is a video with no shoot. Nothing is filmed: everything is drawn, then set in motion. Words appear in time with the voice, one shape turns into another, an app screen slides to the centre, a number counts up to its value. The movement is not decoration. Every move says something.
It is the format most often used to present an app, explain a service or announce something new, because it shows what a camera cannot: an idea, a way of working, a before and an after. If what you need is to explain how something works, start with our guide to making an animated explainer video.
The five styles, and when to pick each one
People often think there is one kind of motion design. There are several families, and each one serves a purpose. Picking the right family is half the work.
| Style | What the viewer sees | Pick it when |
|---|---|---|
| Story | One shape becoming the next, from the problem to the solution | You have to convince someone who does not know you |
| Launch | Bursts of light, your screens arriving in space | You are releasing an app or a product |
| Kinetic type | Large words moving with the voice | Your message fits in a few strong sentences |
| Demonstration | The product being used, step by step | People keep asking “how does it work?” |
| Figures and facts | Counters, curves, a before and an after | You have real numbers to show |
The method in six steps
Write the one sentence
A single sentence that says what the viewer should remember. For example: “With this app, a builder sends the quote from the building site.” Everything else in the video serves that sentence.
Write six to ten short sentences
A hook, the problem, what you offer, two or three proofs, then what the viewer should do. Each sentence fits in one breath. Read them aloud: if you run out of air, cut the sentence in two.
Gather your real material
Two to four sharp screenshots, your logo on a transparent background, the exact name of your brand. These are what the viewer must recognise later.
Choose the style and the background
One of the five styles above, then a background: black, white, a gradient or a deep colour. A quiet background leaves room for your screens.
Choose the voice and the ending
A calm voice, with music that stays low. The last image says one thing only: download the app, visit the site, or call.
Watch it with the sound off
Mute the video and watch. If the idea comes through with the on-screen words alone, the video is ready for social media, where many people watch without sound.
A complete example
A 45-second video for a quoting app
- Hook: “How many quotes did you lose this week?”
- Problem: “In the evening, after the job, nobody feels like writing them.”
- Solution: “With the app, the quote leaves from the site, in two minutes.”
- Proof: a screenshot of the filled-in quote, then a screenshot of the “quote accepted” message.
- Ending: the name of the app and the two app stores.
Notice what is missing: no feature list, no technical word. One situation, one benefit, and real screens. The builder watching this recognises his own evening, and that recognition does more than any list of functions.
What to prepare before you start
Most of the time spent on a motion design video is not spent animating. It is spent deciding what to say and finding the right screens. Prepare these four things first and the rest goes quickly.
- The viewer. One precise person: a shop owner, a student, a parent. Not “everyone”.
- The screenshots. Taken on a recent phone, in light mode, with no notification at the top. Filled with believable data, never an empty screen.
- The logo. The official file, not a photo of your shop sign.
- The action. Where the viewer goes afterwards, and only one place.
The mistakes that make a video look amateur
- Animating everything. When everything moves, nothing stands out. One element moves at a time.
- Too much text on screen. The viewer either reads or listens, not both. Three to six words at a time.
- Invented pictures in place of real screens. The viewer wants to see your product, not an idea of a product.
- Music that covers the voice. The voice carries the message. The music goes with it.
- An ending with no instruction. With no clear action, the interested viewer leaves.
Before you publish your motion design video
- The video carries one idea that you can say in one sentence.
- Your real screens or your real product are visible.
- Every spoken sentence has something to look at.
- The video makes sense with the sound off.
- The last image says what to do.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need software to make motion design?
Professionals use animation software that takes months to learn. There are now tools that build the video from your text and your screenshots: you write the idea, the tool handles the movement.
How long should a motion design video be?
Between 40 and 75 seconds for social media. Beyond that, attention drops. If you have more to say, make two videos, one idea each.
Does motion design suit a small business?
Yes, as soon as you have something to explain: a service, a price, something new. The Demonstration style or the Figures and facts style works well for a local business.
Can I show another brand’s logo in my video?
You can name a brand and show its official logo as it is, unchanged, when you talk about it. Never let the viewer believe that the brand recommends you if it does not.
With Meratek
How Meratek makes your motion design video
In the Motion tab, the Motion design mode starts from your idea, written in a few lines. Meratek asks you a few questions, asks for your screenshots and what each one should show, then writes the story, adds the voice and animates the film. You choose the style among the five, the background and the ending.
Before you start, the price in credits is shown: you confirm or you do not. One hundred and forty credits are offered when you sign up. You remain responsible for what you claim about your product.
